Iceberg Slim Holloway House Publishing 1967
Iceberg Slim’s autobiographical novel sent shockwaves throughout the literary world when it published in 1967. Groundbreaking for its authentic and oft-brutal account of the s e x trade, the book offers readers an unforgettable look at the mores of Chicago’s street life during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. In the preface, Slim says it best, “In this book, I will take you, the reader, with me into the secret inner world of the p i m p.” With millions of copies sold, P I M P has become vital reading across generations of writers, entertainers and filmmakers alike, making it a timeless piece of American literature.

Iceberg Slim is the name Robert Beck used in the ghetto. He was a p i m p and this is his story, told without bitterness and with no pretence at moralizing - the smells, the sounds, the fears, the petty triumphs in the world of the p i m p.

I'm no prude but PIMP by Beck is hardly my preferred genre. I selected this book because it was actually an African American studies class dis. of urban literature, at Princeton no less. This book was one of the titles that convinced me that if an Iceberg Slim could inscribe in his spare time in the street life or whatever, then anyone could. Lol. Really. So thanks for that.
